USS Mullinnix (DD-944): A proud legacy of the United States Navy

The USS Mullinnix (DD-944) is a proud legacy of the United States Navy. A Forrest Sherman-class destroyer, it was commissioned in 1965 and served with distinction until its decommissioning in 1993.

The USS Mullinnix was named in honor of Rear Admiral John Joseph Mullinnix, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1876 to 1927. He served in many battles, including the Spanish-American War, and was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic actions during the battle of Santiago.

The Mullinnix was a formidable warship, equipped with two five-inch guns, two three-inch guns, and four 21-inch torpedo tubes. It also had a sophisticated radar and sonar system and a variety of weapons, from anti-aircraft missiles to depth charges. The ship’s crew was made up of approximately 300 sailors, and its complement included two SH-3 Sea King helicopters.

The Mullinnix saw service in the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War and participated in numerous operations around the world. It served in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean and was part of the United States Sixth Fleet. Notably, the Mullinnix was the first U.S. Navy ship to fire a Tomahawk cruise missile, during Operation Desert Storm.

The legacy of the USS Mullinnix lives on, however, in the memories of the brave men and women who served onboard. The ship was a symbol of American naval might, and its crew served their country with pride and distinction. The USS Mullinnix will always be remembered as a proud and important part of the United States Navy’s history.
